This year’s release schedule just got a little less exciting. Sony Pictures has delayed the release date for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, the sequel to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, moving it to June 2, 2023.
The movie was scheduled to open this October; an animated version of Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile takes its place. Not quite the same thing.
On the plus side, Sony announced a date for Across the Spider-Verse Part II, which we can expect on March 29, 2024—barring further delays.
Into the Spider-Verse, which came out four long years ago, in December 2018, gave us a whole host of spider-folk, including Shameik Moore as Miles Morales, Hailee Steinfeld as Spider-Gwen, and Nicolas Cage as Spider-Man Noir. Moore and Steinfeld will return for the sequel, which also stars Oscar Isaac as Spider-Man 2099. The summary released with the gorgeous first trailer called Across the Spider-Verse “an epic adventure that will transport Brooklyn’s full-time, friendly neighborhood Spider-Man across the Multiverse to join forces with Gwen Stacy and a new team of Spider-People to face off with a villain more powerful than anything they have ever encountered.”
Miles isn’t the only spider-person with a movie on the way. Sony also announced a release date for Madame Web, the spider-spinoff that stars Dakota Johnson and Sydney Sweeney. Johnson plays the title character, who in the comics is quite a bit older than the actress; she’s an elderly psychic and clairvoyant (and mutant) whose life support system looks kind of like a spiderweb. Clearly Sony is going in a somewhat different direction with the film, which is directed by S.J. Clarkson and written by Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless (Lost in Space).
Madame Web arrives July 7, 2023—just a month after Across the Spider-Verse.
